How To Pray

You can speak these words to God, “Father in Heaven, this is hard, but your word says in Romans 8:28 that you will show me the ‘good’ in this situation.” Don’t say it just once—say it over and over. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love… Continue reading How To Pray

Feeling fear and anxiety is not a sin. In fact, God wired you to feel fear at certain times. It’s a defense mechanism. Fear starts in an area of the brain called the amygdala. This little almond-shaped area of the brain regulates how much something stands out to us. When you see somebody you haven’t seen in a long time, the amygdala, with the help of the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, causes you to feel that excitement that comes from reuniting with a long lost friend. These structures of the brain also tell you to steer clear of situations that look threatening. Basically, the hippocampus and the amygdala work together to decide an appropriate response to what your senses detect.

Other environmental factors control fear as well—past experiences, our upbringing, brain chemistry, to name a few, come together to help your brain to properly (or improperly) label what is and isn’t a real threat.

Fear creates concentration and that can be healthy. A person giving a speech who experiences manageable fear prior to speaking can harness that fear to perform better.

A 2013 study from Johns Hopkins University found that worriers are more organized, more goal-oriented, healthier, and tend to plan for the future better because they think about possible outcomes that others don’t. This is why therapy for severe anxiety doesn’t focus on removing anxiety completely but instead, reducing it to healthy levels.

But if these emotions causes you to concentrate on things that are unhealthy, fear and anxiety can become debilitating. A person constantly worrying about getting a catastrophic diagnosis or worrying that something bad will happen to their children are not experiencing the type of fear that God intended.

Healthy Fear:
  • Recognizing and avoiding clearly dangerous environments
  • Fear that causes increased positive performance
  • Fear of the Lord (Proverbs 14:27)
